Europe Square

Europe Square
Europe Square in Batumi – Georgia’s Coastal Gem
When I first entered the heart of Batumi’s old town, I wouldn’t have thought that I would find myself in a square with a Mediterranean vibe, blended with European elegance within a few minutes. This place is none other than Europe Square, which is one of the city’s iconic spots – and not without reason.
At first glance, I felt as if Barcelona, Vienna, and the Georgian Black Sea coast had met for a stylish weekend. In the center of the square rises the Medea statue, who with her golden fleece is one of the most well-known figures in Georgian mythology. The statue forms a kind of cultural bridge between Greek and Georgian legends – even if it did not bring along dragons.
But what really impressed me was the surrounding architecture: houses built in art nouveau and neoclassical style, with lavish façades, wrought-iron balconies, and colorful mosaics. One moment I thought I was on a Parisian boulevard, and the next it seemed as if the sunlight was swirling on a Venetian walking street.
Europe Square is not just a sightseeing spot, but also a meeting place. In the vicinity, there are bars, cafés, ice cream parlours, and boutiques lined up. I sat down with an iced coffee and watched the city’s rhythm: children rollerblading, tourists taking photos, locals laughing. It’s like an endless summer afternoon.
If you like to walk, from here you can easily reach the Batumi Boulevard, the port, or the famous Alphabet Tower. But honestly? I spent at least an hour just on Europe Square. Because there is something special about this square. It’s as if you are in a timeless world, where Europe and Georgia shake hands and say, “Stay a little longer.”
If you are in Batumi, don’t rush past Europe Square – it’s one of the city’s most beautiful heartbeats.
